Our Knossos Labyrinth Garden Stele is a terrific and unusual sculpture; actually, a fragment of ancient Minoan (Cretan) stone stele. A stele is a stone or wooden slab, generally taller than it is wide, erected in the ancient world as a monument. This stele is a wonderful garden folly that will delight and entertain visitors. It is also fairly large standing at almost 3 feet (33") in height. The stele itself has a fascinating labyrinth design on its face with sculptural bas reliefs of ancient horsemen along the top of the circular design. Labyrinths became a favorite motif throughout history and especially in the Middle Ages of Europe. A famous labyrinth design can be found at the Chartres Cathedral in France and other examples are manifested in the mazes found in some of the great gardens of Europe and America. Knossos was the major city of the Minoan Civilization and has been called Europe's oldest city. The palace of Knossos eventually became the ceremonial and political centre of the Minoan civilization and culture. Because the palace was so large and had so many rooms compared to the one or two room homes found in the ancient world at the time, the ancient Greeks called the palace a labyrinth (maze) and the famous myth of the Minoan Bull was born.
